Suspect dead, no officers injured in police shooting at north Phoenix mall

PHOENIX (AZ Family) – A suspect is dead and no officers were injured after a police shooting in north Phoenix Wednesday morning.

The authorities were initially called to the area for Interstate 17 and Thunderbird Road shortly after 11 o’clock

Phoenix police confirmed the suspect died at the scene and no officers were injured.

Freeway traffic cameras showed more than a dozen Phoenix police patrol vehicles surrounding the mall with officers drawing weapons in a tactical position. Part of the Whataburger parking lot was also taped off.

Both directions of Thunderbird from 31st Avenue to I-17 will be closed for much of the day.

The I-17 exit ramps to Thunderbird Road were closed but have since reopened.

Police are actively working to find out what led to the shooting. Residents are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

This is the 54th shooting in Maricopa County and the 90th in the state in 2024.
