Gianluigi Donnarumma suffers a horrific facial injury that doesn’t even draw a yellow card

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was substituted in the 22nd minute of PSG’s midweek Ligue 1 game against Monaco after suffering a truly horrific facial injury.

Somehow it didn’t even draw a yellow card to the opponent.

Letting the ball in from the right flank with only the goalkeeper to beat, Monaco full-back Wilfried Singo tried to poke the ball past Donnarumma. As the PSG keeper closed the gap, Singo ran out of space and the follow-up from his effort saw him landing his boot directly on Donnarumma’s face.

Donnarumma received lengthy treatment on the field before being forced to leave the game, replaced by backup Matvey Safonov. Images on the pitch appeared to show that Donnarumma’s treatment on the pitch included the Italian receiving staples to close the wound temporarily before being taken off at all.

At the break, a picture had already been shared by RMC Sport reporter Arthur Perrot of Donnarumma’s injury, which showed the injury happened from the dressing room.

Somehow, incredibly, Singo did not receive a yellow card for the foul despite the gruesome contact. It would have been a key moment in the match if the referee had decided to book the Monaco defender as he had already received a yellow card in the 13th minute of the match, meaning he would have been sent off.

PSG would receive another scare later as Safonov’s arm was stamped on by Lamine Camarawhich obviously rips the replacement goalkeeper’s greensleeve he’s wearing. Like the previous incident, Camara received a yellow card at that time but was not booked a second time.

With Donnarumma out injured and PSG’s opponents still with 11 players, Monaco would score twice shortly after the break to take a 2-1 lead, but PSG managed a late comeback as Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele combined for three goals for to secure a 4th -2 wins.

The injury could be a major blow for PSG depending on how much time Donnarumma is forced to miss. The Parisian club are in a poor position near the bottom of the Champions League standings, with the Italian one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal European campaign. His absence would further diminish their chances of sneaking into a knockout qualification position.
