The Liverpool star is set to make his full debut in the Carabao Cup

As Liverpool’s jubilant players celebrated the Carabao Cup success with a chorus of You will never walk alone in front of their supporters, a shy figure wearing the No98 shirt and with a winner’s medal dangling from his neck stood at the end of the queue, trying to take it all in.

Trey Nyoni didn’t come off the bench at Wembley in February as Jürgen Klopp’s men helped overcome Chelsea, but his presence at all spoke volumes.

Even allowing for an injury crisis that forced the likes of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Núñez and Dominik Szoboszlai to the sidelines, the presence of the then 16-year-old midfielder served as a reflection of the belief Liverpool had on his talent.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot talks to Trey Nyoni during a training session.

Castle says he is “looking after” Nyoni, who signed from Leicester City a year ago
