The discourse surrounding Marcus Rashford has been so intense that it feels like he is the only player at the club who is set to leave, and it can’t happen soon enough.

But like Olmo or Kolo Muani, Rashford’s situation is not entirely in United’s hands either, thanks to the salary the previous board showered him with.

Furthermore, it can be argued that the best time to sell Rashford is actually in the summer, when teams have more money and plan for the whole season.

The same cannot be said about the two Scandinavians in the club – Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof, who are on expiring contracts.

Both can speak to potentially interested parties from January 1 and for a club that pleads for poverty every chance it gets, letting players leave on a free transfer just isn’t palatable.

Eriksen’s wages of around £150,000 a week could make it a difficult situation, but Lindelof has attracted interest from Europe for a while now and United need to cash in.

Nor is it important enough to the current arrangement that the club decide their contribution for six months is worth letting them travel for free in the summer.

Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof transfer has another advantage

Apart from the obvious cost saving of six months’ salary plus any transfer fee, however, there is another benefit to the double sale.

If the duo played every game and made a difference, an argument could arise as to whether United are better off keeping them.

But the minutes they take up could be perfect to bleed in a youngster or two who can actually form the backbone of the team long term.

United’s season is going nowhere domestically, so it’s not like there is a need for experience in backups while the club are already out of one cup competition and face Arsenal away in the other.

Someone like Godwill Kukonki in defense and Toby Collyer in midfield is much more useful to the team in the long term. Although they are not good enough to contribute long-term, Willy Kambwala’s transfer showed how quickly a client’s value can increase when he has first-team experience.

Therefore, the sale of Lindelof and Eriksen must be the two deals United absolutely must make in January.
