Joseph earns ICC ‘Emerging’ nomination | Local sports

West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph has been nominated for the ICC’s prestigious Men’s Emerging Cricket of the Year award.

Joseph was revealed along with England’s Gus Atkinson, Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis and Pakistan’s Saim Ayub on the first shortlist for the 2024 awards.

The 25-year-old Joseph took 29 wickets in eight Tests and burst onto the scene in January when he took seven wickets in the second Test at the Gabba with an injured toe to bowl the West Indies to their first Test win in Australia for 27 years.

Playing his first Test series, Joseph produced an incredible performance, claiming 13 wickets from two Tests, including two five-wicket hauls, and became the first West Indian in 17 years to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut.

Later in the year, Joseph was clinical in the home series against Bangladesh and South Africa, finishing with 12 wickets from three outings.

For the women’s equivalent, no players from the West Indies women’s team are included, with South African all-rounder Annerie Dercksen, Scotland’s Saskia Horley, India’s Shreyanka Patil and Ireland’s Freya Sargent the nominees.

The 2024 ICC Awards comprise 12 individual awards, with shortlists in nine categories to be revealed by the ICC between 28 and 30 December.
