Drake Maye injury update: NFL Network delivers latest after helmet-to-helmet hit vs. Chargers

The New England Patriots are in the midst of a Saturday afternoon game with the Los Angeles Chargers in Foxborough, but quarterback Drake Maye dealing with some grief after suffering an injury.

Earlier in the first quarter, the rookie left the contest after a hard hit by the Chargers cornerback Cam Hart. He was taken to the locker room and labeled questionable to return with a head injury. Afterwards, NFL Network’s Steve Wyche gave an update on his status.

“You’ll see Jacoby Brissett go out with the offense this time as Drake Maye is now questionable with a head injury,” reported Wyche. “He was taken back to the dressing room with four medical staff escorting him without his helmet.”

Alas, Maye left the game early in the first quarter. He stayed down for a few seconds after the hit before getting up and finally making his way to the medical tent. Eventually, the former North Carolina star went to the locker room after being checked in the medical tent. He was 1-for-1 passing for 1 yard before leaving the game.

Brissett took over after Maye was checked out, but the Patriots received some positive news afterward — Maye returned to the field and grabbed his helmet and head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that he will return to the game when New England returns to the offense.

At 3-12, the Patriots aren’t playing for much other than pride, but Maye has been an incredible bright spot. While his numbers aren’t perfect — he’s racked up 2,159 yards passing, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while also rushing for 389 yards and two touchdowns — his play has been something New England is excited about for the future.

Next week, the Patriots finish their regular season against the Buffalo Bills, who they also played last week. Valuable experience is on the table for Drake Maye, so hopefully he can stay healthy for New England during the final two weeks of his rookie campaign.
