Report: Jim Mora, UConn agree to new contract through 2028 season, pay raise

Jim Mora and UConn have agreed to a new contract for the Huskies head coach. The report came early Saturday from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

UConn also reportedly pays its coach more. Mora’s new deal will see him coach UConn through the 2028 season and will include a salary increase to $2.5 million annually over the length of the deal.

Mora led the Huskies to an 8-4 record in the regular season. The news comes shortly before the Huskies took the field in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl vs. North Carolina. Heading into Saturday’s matchup, Mora has a combined record of 17-20 as the head coach at UConn across three seasons at the position.

Mora’s offense has been a major contributor to their success this season. Boasting a three-headed backfield with Cam Edwards, Durrell Robinson and Mel Brownthe trio has combined for 2,064 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns this season.

When Mora took over the program for the 2022 season, it was immediate. The Huskies finished 2021 1-11 overall, but in his first season at the helm, he led his program to a 6-7 record with an appearance in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. This season was dubbed the “Husky Revolution” as the program had not been to a bowl game since 2015.

A disappointing 3-9 season followed during 2023, but Mora turned the Huskies’ fortunes around in 2024 after winning eight regular season games. That’s the most by a UConn team in a single season since 2010.

Despite a bumpy road last season, AD David Benedict’s words about Mora’s hiring ring true.

“Jim is a proven winner, a man of integrity, and he possesses the experience and energy to lead our football program back to success,” said Benedict. “Jim is excited and undaunted by this challenge, and we both know this program has great potential. I am confident that UConn football under Coach Mora’s leadership will once again realize that potential.”

A win over the Tar Heels on Saturday would mark the first 9-win season in program history since 2007. They have never won 10 games at the Division I level – something Mora and company will look to accomplish in the coming years.

Kickoff between the Huskies and Tar Heels is set for 11 ET live from inside Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.
