Tracks rain and strong storms Saturday through Sunday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A powerful storm system will move across the Deep South this weekend, bringing strong to severe storms with it. Alabama is dealing with activity on radar right now, but more is expected Saturday into Saturday night and will likely linger into Sunday morning; damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, lightning and hail are the primary impacts, with the tornado threat low but not zero.

For the rest of our Friday, a few scattered showers and/or storms will develop as the day ends. One or two storms may produce isolated strong winds and/or some small hail, but we do not expect widespread severe weather problems on Friday as the warm air has been slow to return to our atmosphere.

We will be watching closely on Saturday… a disturbance is expected to press over the region. Temperatures will rise to around 70 degrees and winds will remain gusty.

A FIRST ALARM as a few stronger storms will be possible during the afternoon and overnight Saturday, with the primary threats being damaging wind gusts and large hail. Tornado probability is low, but not zero.

Rain will continue through Saturday night and into Sunday morning as the system exits the region. Sunday morning we will see temperatures in the 60s with afternoon temperatures near 70.

We dry out briefly Sunday afternoon and into Monday ahead of our next system arriving on New Year’s Eve. That system will bring more rain Monday night into Tuesday.

The big story to welcome in January will be the drop in temperatures. With afternoon highs back in the 40s and 50s and overnight highs expected to be in the 20s and 30s.
