Rumored Red Sox Target Reportedly Agrees To Massive Deal With D-Backs

An NL West team reportedly won the Corbin Burnes lottery early Saturday morning.

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, Burnes agreed to a six-year, $210 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The agreement reportedly contains an opt-out after two years.

The Boston Red Sox were reportedly “in contact” with the four-time All-Star, and some pundits and insiders believed they were in the mix to sign the right-hander. Instead, Alex traded Cora’s side for Garrett Crochet and reportedly agreed to a deal with Walker Buehler. The Sox were also reportedly involved in other trade discussions.

Burnes reportedly wanted to stay in his native West Coast and lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. The D-backs were the pick for the National League Cy Young winner. However, the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays were reportedly seen as the favorites for his services.

The Orioles and Blue Jays will likely leave the Burnes sweepstakes disappointed as Baltimore lost its ace and Toronto missed out on another undrafted free agent it was heavily linked to. For Arizona, it gets another pitcher to lead his formidable rotation to compete in the NL West.

Burnes’ reported megadeal will likely get the rest of the pitching market going as teams search for their backup plans.
