Kera Birkeland, a state representative serving Summit County, announces resignation

State Representative Kera Birkeland, best known for sponsoring legislation to ban transgender girls from high school sports and limiting which bathrooms and changing rooms transgender people can useretires from the legislature after winning re-election in the fall.

Birkeland published on social media on Thursday that she will spend more time with her family, especially her parents, and will step down from her seat with effect from 10 January 2025 – 11 days before the start of the AGM.

“My family and professional commitments have increasingly required my attention away from home, a trend that I expect will continue for the next year or two,” she wrote in a resignation letter to House Speaker Mike Schultz, which Birkeland posted on social media .

“My time as a representative in the Utah House has been immensely fulfilling, bringing joy and passion,” she wrote. “Ultimately, though, it’s not the title that defines us, but rather the impact we make to uplift those we serve.”

In July was Birkeland employed as director of policy for the Montana Grain Growers Associationalthough she never disclosed the employment in her required conflict of interest disclosure. Her next disclosure would be due Jan. 10, the day her resignation takes effect. Montana’s legislative session opens January 6, 2025.
