Rutgers will be without Kyle Monangai in the 2024 Rate Bowl

Rutgers will be without its biggest offensive weapon Thursday.

Kyle Monangai will not play in the 2024 Rate Bowl, head coach Greg Schiano announced. Monangai will be on the sidelines during the game helping coach the running backs.

“He’s decided not to, which I fully understand,” Schiano said during Rate Bowl Media Day. “Kyle has done so much for Rutgers. Excited about his future. He’s been great. He’s helped coach, he’s been to every meet. If you didn’t know, you’d think he was playing. It’s just the way he’s prepared. But that’s Kyle. If he wants to do something, he’ll do it all.”

Monangai will sit out, which will avoid injury and not affect his draft stock heading into 2025.

During a small open portion of practice, Monangai was in street clothes and assisted RB coach Damiere Shaw.

This closes the books on a legendary career for Monangai at Rutgers.

Named First Team All-Big Ten in 2024, Monangai finished with 256 carries for 1,279 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns in 2024. He was the conference’s leading rusher in 2023 and established himself as one of the best backs in the conference.
