Vanderbilt football has shown the potential for surprise this season.

After being the overwhelming choice to quit last in the reconfigured 16-team SECThe Commodores are bowl eligible, with a 6-5 record. They got there by also picking up a pair of unexpected wins, none more emphatic than an Oct. 5 home win against then-No. 1 Alabama.

Coach Clark Lea’s team can pull off another upset to end the regular season — and do so at the expense of an in-state rival.

Vanderbilt hosts the No. 8 in Tennessee on Saturday at FirstBank Stadium in one of the more anticipated meetings between the two sides in their modern history.

With a win, the Vols would effectively secure a spot in the College Football Playoff, though a loss would likely knock them out of consideration. The Commodoresmeanwhile, can guarantee themselves a winning season with a win that would also give them their most wins in a season since 2013.

The game was one of several ESPN’s “College GameDay” picks while broadcast live from outside Kyle Field in College Station, Texas ahead of Saturday night’s meeting between Texas and Texas A&M.
