Teams making pitches to the Blue Jackets for David Jiricek

The well-documented David Jiricek trade saga may be coming to an end soon.

The defenseman has been involved in trade rumors dating back to last season after he expressed his displeasure at being sent down to the American Hockey League.

On Nov. 16, Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell said a decision would be made soon regarding the 20-year-old blueliner.

That decision turned out to send Jiricek back to the AHL, but according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, teams are serious about acquiring the former sixth pick.

“I think there are teams making legitimate pitches for Jiricek,” Friedman continued Hockey night in Canada headlines Saturday segment. “Columbus has to decide what they want to do here.”

“There have been some reports about Edmonton, but just looking at it myself, I don’t know if I’ll see a game there,” Friedman added. “Columbus is looking for a young player like that in return, I just don’t know that Edmonton has the fight to make that kind of deal.”

Jiricek played in 43 games with Columbus last season, but the right-handed defenseman has only appeared in six games this season and has registered a solitary assist.

The blueliner is under contract for this season and next with a cap hit under $1 million before becoming a restricted free agent.
