Some disappointing news about ‘The Boys’ season 5 release date

The Boys are bowing out after five seasons, but they’re not leaving the universe with a spin-off rolling and another on the way. Now we have an update on when season 5 of The Boys might be here, based on the filming schedule that has just been revealed.

Collider reports that The Boys Season 5 will begin filming on November 25. Of course, that’s pretty far off since it wrapped up season 4 on July 18, but we do know what the release date might be based on past filming schedules.

We will use the latest one as an example. Season 4 of The Boys started filming on August 22, 2022. Season 4 was then released on June 13, 2024. So that’s 22 months, almost two years between seasons.

Unlike some shows, The Boys did not begin filming while the current season aired, instead waiting five months. So if it starts shooting on November 25, 2024, 22 months from that would be September 2026. That would mean over two years would pass between seasons 4 and 5, at the high end of things even in this sprawling streaming- era release cycle. Some shows hit 3 full years, but most try to stay around 18 months. Only a handful of shows are still able to come out annually like Slow Horses or The Bear.

The good news is that between seasons 4 and 5 of The Boys, we’ll get a new season of Gen V, which will be some time in 2025, the “empty” year of The Boys content, which is one of the reasons to the show being made up in the first place. That season itself will be slightly delayed due to the tragic death of star Chance Perdomo, 27, who died last year and the season had to be rewritten as a result.

The other spin-off is The Boys: Mexico with Diego Luna, post-Andor and Gael Garcia Bernal. It doesn’t have a release date at all, and it stands to reason that it might not start up until The Boys Season 5 airs.

In the end, it looks like it will take seven years to get 5 years of The Boys out. It could be worse, but these gaps get longer over time. Maybe production could move faster this time, completely outside of the pandemic, but we’ll have to see. For now, late 2026 seems to be the best bet, so just get ready for the (arguably better) Gen V Season 2 instead.
