500,000 sold on Amazon recalled after fires

More than half a million space heaters sold on Amazon are being recalled due to a safety issue, federal product regulators announced Thursday.

GoveeLife and Govee Smart Electric Space Heaters can overheat, pose a fire and burn hazard, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission posted online.

According to the safety commission, about 512,500 were sold in the United States and about 48,600 were sold in Canada.

Tests have determined that the smart electric space heaters do not meet “the voluntary industry safety standard, UL 1278,” posing an overheating and fire risk from wireless control features, the safety commission wrote in the release.

According to the commission, there have been 113 reports of overheating, including seven reports of fires and one report of a minor burn injury.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and contact the brands for a refund.
