The Detroit Pistons were seconds away from winning their third straight game.

The Pistons made a super clutch play in the final seconds to take the lead over Charlotte Hornets first rounder Ron Holland II, but lost in a heartbreaker when they forced a missed shot from Grant Williams before Brandon Miller was in perfect position for a tip-in to beat the stamps as time ran out.

The loss was hard to swallow as the Pistons were on the verge of doing something they didn’t do once last year, and that’s win three in a row.

But as even the Pistons’ front office said in the offseason, this year isn’t necessarily about wins and losses in the first year of a rebuild, even though the team absolutely had to be better than last year’s historically bad squad.

So far that has been the case, and to no one’s surprise, Cade Cunningham leads the way. Cunningham posted his second straight triple-double on Wednesday, scoring 20 points against the Hornets to go along with 10 rebounds and 10 assists while committing just two turnovers.

In the previous game, Cunningham had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Cunningham’s backcourt mate, Jaden Ivey, also continued his strong start to the season, scoring 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting. It was the fifth time in nine games this year that Ivey has scored over 20 points.

Unfortunately for the Pistons, big man Jalen Duren had to leave the game in the first quarter after injuring his ankle, and his status for Friday’s game against the Hawks appears to be in doubt.

The Pistons play next Sunday at home against the Houston Rockets.
