ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit shares harrowing update on beloved Golden Retriever amid cancer battle

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit shared a heartbreaking update on the health of his beloved service dog Ben this week.

“I’ve had so many people ask me about Ben that I wanted to let you know – Ben had another chemo shot on October 23rd and has been getting worse and worse since then,” Herbstreit wrote on social media November 4th.

“He’s lost the use of his back legs – almost like they’re paralyzed. He can barely walk. He hasn’t eaten in 3 days,” he continued. “I’m currently in Pennsylvania with a holistic doctor who administers a 3 day Vitamin C IV hoping it will flush (the toxins) out of his body and give him a chance. The next 24-48 hours will tell us whether he has a chance or not.”

Ben has followed Herbstreit on College GameDay for the past two years – appearing on the pitch and even in the broadcast booth. Athletic departments across the country began giving the friendly pup special credentials to wear. And even as he battled leukemia, Ben’s tail continued to wag.

Herbstreit thanked fans for their support amid the golden retriever’s battle with cancer.

“I am so grateful for ALL the love so many have shown him over the past few years. One of the hardest things I have gone through in my life,” Herbstreit wrote.

β€œBen is my best friend and companion. I love him with all my heart,” he continued. “If you are a spiritual person, I would love for you to pray for my boy. He is currently in a hospital ER overnight and I am picking him up tomorrow for another round of Vitamin C. Please pray for Ben and hope he pulls through.”

We love you, Ben!
