Heavy rain could lead to localized flooding overnight and Thursday

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Rounds of heavy rain are returning to the Midlands tonight and Thursday, prompting us to issue a First alarm weather day.

A flash flood warning has been issued for northwestern Calhoun County, southeastern Lexington County, north-central Orangeburg County and southern Richland County.

According to the National Weather Service, between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain has fallen.

Locations expected to experience flash flooding include: Orangeburg, Brookdale, St. Matthews, Gaston, Sandy Run, Claflin College, South Carolina State University, Edisto Gardens, Congaree National Park, Orangeburg County Airport, Swansea, North, Woodford, Prince of Orange Mall, Edisto and Wilkinson Heights.

Flooding is also expected on portions of Interstate 26 between mile markers 123 and 149.

Overview of first warning

Good afternoon, Peeks of sunshine will help highs climb to around 80 degrees. Closer to sunset our next round of rain starts to arrive. As showers become heavier and more numerous tonight, we have posted a First alarm weather day.

Three elements are working together to cause this abundance of moisture tonight and Thursday. Onshore flow from the Atlantic, as well as Rafael’s moisture from the Gulf, is being carried into the Midlands thanks to an approaching cold front.

These rounds of heavy rain will lead to totals of 2 to 5 inches across parts of the Midlands. The highest rainfall amounts will occur across the CSRA.

On Friday, the front line moved towards the coast. This will reduce our chances of rain, although a stray shower or two cannot be ruled out over the weekend. High temperatures will drop into the low 70s.

Today: After a foggy morning, sunshine is looking forward to this afternoon. Then showers come late in the day. Chance of rain 50%. Temperatures close to 80 degrees.

(First alarm weather day) Tonight: Heavy rain coming and going overnight. Chance of rain 90%. Lows in the upper 60s.

(First Alert Weather Day) Thursday: Rounds with heavy rain, especially in the morning. Chance of rain 80%. Highlights of the mid-70s.

Friday: Brilliant sunshine all day. Stray showers cannot be ruled out. Highlights of the mid-70s.

Saturday: Partly to mostly cloudy. Slight risk of rain showers. Highs in the low-70s.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy skies. Slight risk of rain showers. Highs in the low-70s.
