US election live: Trump votes in Florida as first results reported from Dixville Notch

Kamala Harris’ run has been extraordinary.

From an almost standing start she was propelled to the nomination after Joe Biden’s dramatic exit.

Her campaign has lasted a little more than 100 daysa relative blip in American election cycles.

She needed to gather support to fend off talk of an open convention, find a running mate, establish policy positions and move forward.

Her ascension to the top of the ticket sparked the race.

Social media lit up, with a lot of help from pop star Charli XCX’s three-word post.

Coconut memes and lime green flooded feeds, raise hope Gen-Z voters were encouraged by her campaign.

Her opponent Donald Trump seemed grumpy and about being kicked out, often referring to Biden as if the 2020 rematch was still on.

Then the shine fell a little from the deputy chairman.

She had a great debate against Trump, but in sit-down interviews when she finally agreed to them, she came across as overly scripted and not agile.

Now voting in the last days of the race has given the Harris campaign hope that things are moving in the right direction.

“Momentum is on our side,” she told the crowd at her campaign rally in Philadelphia.

She also told them there was still work to be done.

If the polls are correct, every vote can really count.

Harris has refrained from making her campaign about her gender or racial identity.

Her supporters are well aware of the historic nature of her run.

But Democrats have been disappointed on that front before, in another election eight years ago, when a woman, Hillary Clintonwent up against the same opponent Kamala Harris faces.

Today they dare to dream a little, but also brace themselves for disappointment.
