Student injured in ‘targeted’ shooting behind Central High School; suspect in custody

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A student is fighting for his life after he was wounded Monday in what police say was a “targeted” shooting behind Central High School.

A member of the Memphis-Shelby County School Board confirmed that both the victim and suspect are students at the school.

The Memphis Police Department was notified of the shooting at 2:44 p.m. Monday after school.

The victim was found in the Central High parking lot and taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Officers learned the shooter was still in the area while on scene; they later located him near Bellevue Middle School and took him into custody.

MPD says preliminary information indicates this was a targeted incident.

MSCS board member says the shooting happened while the victim was walking from the soccer field near the parking lot.

No charges have been filed at this time.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic school shooting that occurred earlier today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims. We strongly support comprehensive legislation to address gun control and ensure the safety of our students.
