Battleground states extend voting time in key areas

Several battleground states extended Tuesday’s opening hours for polling places, citing unexpected wait times, technical issues and other problems for voters in key areas.

Here’s a rundown of the states and territories affected so far.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, where state polls are scheduled to close at 8 p.m., voters saw extensions in Luzerne County, where local election officials said residents have until 8 p.m. 21.30 to cast their vote.

Voters in line before 8 p.m. will still be able to vote in the county’s regular voting system, state officials said, and voters in line after 8 p.m. 20:00, will be able to vote by provisional ballot.

Earlier Tuesday was Pennsylvania Department of State announced a two-hour extension of voting hours in Cambria County, citing a “software error” that temporarily delayed the scanning of ballots in the area.

Voters in Cambria County will have until 22.00 to vote, two hours after the deadline at 8 p.m., although any vote cast after 8 p.m. 20.00, must be done using provisional ballots.

North Carolina

In North Carolina, state election officials extended voting hours by 30 minutes in Burke County and Wilson County precincts. The voters who want until 20.00 to cast their vote – longer than the deadline at 19.30 in the rest of the state.

Georgia

Georgia also announced an expansion for Atlanta-area voters in Cobb County, Fulton County and Gwinnett County.

Two polling places in Fulton County were evacuated earlier Tuesday due to several “non-credible” bomb threats, prompting county officials to file an application to extend voting hours to 1 p.m. 19.30

In Gwinnett County, officials said voters at a separate polling place that was also the target of a bomb threat will have until 6 p.m. 20.00 to cast their vote.
