Glenn Hoddle shares if he thinks Chelsea’s Cole Palmer could eclipse Phil Foden

Cole Palmer officially signed as a Chelsea player last September and almost everything he’s touched since then has turned to gold.

Chelsea supporters have been extremely lucky to enjoy Cole Palmer, 22, producing moments of magic on a consistent basis at Stamford Bridge.

So far, the left-footer has thrived in a number 10 position under Enzo Maresca. He has scored seven goals and provided five assists in nine Premier League games this season.

Chelsea supporters wanted Palmer to come off the bench against Newcastle United during yesterday’s Carabao Cup defeat, but he was kept in reserve and is fit for Sunday’s tie with Manchester United.

Glenn Hoddle has advice for Cole Palmer at Chelsea

Glenn Hoddle’s advice to Chelsea star Palmer is to continue to play with complete freedom and not to change his approach.

Hoddle told The Overlap: “Palmer is interesting because if he stays independent of the game and just plays… To me he’s like a player playing in the playground. Play in the playground, there’s no shape, give me the ball then I’ll show you what I can do. He’s like that.

“If he doesn’t change, I think he could elevate himself to be a super superstar and probably go ahead of (Phil) Foden in a lot of ways. The question mark is can he do that in the coming seasons?

Chelsea fans stunned Palmer finished 25th in the Ballon d’Or this year, but he should expect to be back in the mix for the best individual awards each season if he continues on his current path.

Can Cole Palmer overtake Phil Foden?

Like so many people in the industry, Hoddle drew a comparison above between Palmer and Manchester City’s 24-year-old playmaker Phil Foden. The attacking midfielders were former teammates at the Etihad Stadium, but now the only time they will wear the same shirt is with the England national team.

During an interview this month, Jamie Carragher claimed that Palmer is currently better than Foden. However, there is no doubt that the Manchester City ace has the far greater CV than his Chelsea counterpart.

Here’s a look at how Palmer and Foden compare in their senior club careers so far:

Player Appearances Goal Assisting Trophies
Phil Foden 281 89 55 17
Cole Palmer 97 38 22 6

There is only a couple of years of age difference between Foden and Palmer, but the former developed through the Man City academy at a much faster pace.

For Palmer, his focus should only be on what he is doing at Chelsea rather than comparing himself to anyone else. It is clear that he has a special talent and his potential is gigantic, but let’s see how he does now that he is firmly in the limelight.
