BOCA RATON – Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting at Second Avenue and Second Street downtown Wednesday morning.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., a Boca Raton police officer “encountered an individual” between Northwest Second Street and Palmetto Park Road, police spokeswoman Jessica Desir told reporters at the scene.

At some point during that encounter, Desir said, the officer fired his weapon.

“We can confirm that a man has died and we are working to identify that person,” Desir told reporters.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was on the scene and had taken over the investigation, which Desir told reporters was “standard protocol” in officer-involved shootings.

The officer — whom Desir did not immediately identify — was not injured, she said.

The department wrote on the social media platform X that it has closed the intersection. Authorities have contained the scene and are asking the public to avoid the area northeast of City Hall.
