South Africa qualify for the World Test Championship final by beating Pakistan

South Africa had the better of most of the first three days but began the fourth day 27-3 with their hopes hanging in the balance.

The experienced pair of Bavuma and Aiden Markram got on their nerves early until Abbas bowled Markram for 37 for his first wicket on the fourth day.

Abbas, with his immaculate lines and lengths, bowled through the 30.3 overs either side of lunch on a lively pitch.

The Proteas’ innings hit real controversy after Bavuma was caught behind for 40, although replays suggested the ball hit his pocket instead of the bat, potentially saving the South African captain had he opted to declare.

Naseem Shah then bowled Kyle Verreynne for two and Abbas had David Bedingham and Corbin Bosch caught behind in the next over.

At that point, South Africa needed another 49 with two wickets remaining as Rabada joined all-rounder Jansen.

First, the couple reached lunch at 116-8, which calmed some of the drama. Afterwards, Rabada played the deciding hand.

The left-hander attacked and smashed four of his five fours after the break.

It got the momentum back to South Africa and when Jansen steered the winning runs behind points there were jubilant scenes in the stands and clear emotion among the players.

“There wasn’t much conversation,” said Bavuma, when asked about the situation at the lunch. “I was still sulking in the toilet. I got out when we needed about 15 runs. It was a tough one.”
