ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1287 Hints, Clues and Answer for Friday, December 27

When I was a child, the days between Christmas and New Year were a kind of magical time. School was out. There was always snow on the ground. There was always plenty of good food and family gatherings and extra time to use new toys.

Now I find myself wading through a kind of winter melancholy every year around this time. A week of mild gloom. It’s almost like a spiritual Christmas hangover. All the anticipation and build-up leading up to the big day, and then it’s over, with wrapping paper on the floor. Back to work. Back to life. Back to this liminal week squeezed and twisted between two of the biggest holidays of the year.

And a word to solve, of course. Shall we?

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “despise” comes from Old Frenchdescribesimportance “to shout, announce, or denounce.” This again comes from the prefix of- (meaning “down” or “away”) and crying (meaning “to cry or proclaim”). In late 16th-century English, condemn got the meaning of to publicly condemn or criticize something.
