Usman Khawaja is open about when his Test cricket career will end, saying he will play as long as Australia want him and he contributes.

The 38-year-old’s comments at a lunch in Brisbane earlier this month led to speculation he could be aiming to retire after the 2026 Sydney Ashes Test.

But the left-hander is adamant there is no plan for when he will retire.

“There is no set date,” he told ABC radio. “It will end at some point – I don’t know when. I will not fight it.”

Khawaja hit a timely 57 on Boxing Day, his first Test half-century since January.

“I’m a realist – I’m a lot closer to the end than the start and I’ve had a really good relationship with (coach) Andrew McDonald and (committee chairman) George Bailey,” he said.

“I am here as long as the team needs me and personally I feel I can perform and do well.

“It is exactly the same for them, as long as they feel that I can contribute and perform. I am a valued part of the team I play for.

“But there has to be a time when I either want to resign or they think it’s time to move on – whatever it is, I’m very open to that.”
