Phoenix police responded to a reported shooting at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Wednesday night as some travelers were returning or late for the Christmas holiday.

Airport officials said the report of gunfire came just after 1 p.m. 21.40 in terminal 4 at the airport.

Phoenix police issued the Xearlier Twitter that officers are “investigating a shooting that happened at @PHXSkyHarbor.” No suspects are wanted and airport operations have resumed, the tweet states.

There is no active threat at the airport, the police announced on X just before midnight. Also, no flights are affected by the ongoing investigation, they said.

“Detectives are on the scene completing an initial review to determine what led to this incident,” informed the police on X.

Marvin Miller, a cleaner at the airport for three years, said he heard three gunshots in quick succession around 10 p.m.

“I heard three shots, they were different than fireworks, shots are a big difference,” said Miller, who was just coming off duty when he was told of the incident by his colleagues.

Miller reflected on security issues he saw at the airport when he said anyone from the outside was able to walk into the airport terminal.

Eric Everts, an airport spokesman, said in an emailed statement, “The Terminal 4 A security checkpoint was temporarily closed and PHX Sky Train operations were paused at Terminal 4 as a precaution.”

Everts did not say if anyone was hurt, and there is yellow crime scene tape around the terminal on TV news.

“The incident has been resolved and operations are returning to normal. We recommend that you contact the police for additional information,” Everts said in the statement.

The east side of Sky Harbor’s Terminal 4 remained closed following the police situation.

The Phoenix Fire Department will not comment on the situation. But Fire Capt. Rob McDade said Phoenix police would be the lead agency.
