ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1284 Hints, Clues and Answer for Tuesday, December 24th

Christmas has come and gone. It’s always a little bittersweet. So much anticipation leading up to Christmas and then it comes and we open our presents and listen to the music and then it’s over. But we still have New Year’s Eve to look forward to!

Yesterday I gave you a Wordle Wednesday puzzle and it was a pretty tough one! Today I will give you the answer. Here was the puzzle:

Christmas riddle

Santa is in his workshop,

With gifts stacked to the sky.

He calls three wise elves,

To help with his supply.

The first elf takes half of the pile,

Then adds three more gifts.

The other elf takes half of what is left,

And adds the same as before.

The third elf does the same again,

Leaving Santa with only one.

How many presents did Santa have

Before the goblins started?

The answer is 50. There is a complicated mathematical way to solve this, but I will just explain the numbers. If the first elf takes half of the pile – 25 – and adds 3 together, you get 28. The second elf takes half of what is left – 11 – and adds 3 together, you get 14. 14 + 28 = 42 .The third elf does the same, takes half of 8—4—and adds 3. That’s 7. 42 + 7 = 49. There’s one present left for Santa, which leaves us with 50.

And that’s all folks! Have a great rest of 2024! Now let’s solve this Wordle. . . .

Word analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

I got lucky with my first guess today. I have used FLARE a number of times in the past, but it was better than ever today, leaving me with only 5 possible solutions. MAFIA was the best second guess I could have come up with – I would never have guessed the answer to #2 – leaving me with only 1 possible solution: AFFIX for the win. That’s a hard word!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and another point for beating Bot who took four tries today. 2 points for me!

How to play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 point; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. If you stand straight, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
  • Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running account or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “put on” comes from Latin affixparticiple of displayimportance “to attach to”. This is derived from advertising (meaning “to” or “against”) and figs (meaning “to fasten” or “fix”). The term entered Middle English in the late 15th century and retained the meaning of attach or add something.
