President Abinader and Minister Collado unveil revitalized Malecón in San Pedro de Macorís

San Pedro de Macorís, DR.- President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado on Saturday inaugurated the newly renovated Malecón in San Pedro de Macorís, a transformative project with a total investment of over RD$290 million.

The extensive renovation covers 1.84 kilometers of the coastal strip, transforming it into a living linear park spanning 60,000 square meters, including 12,000 square meters of modern sidewalks. The Malecón now boasts two expansive recreation zones, a business area with nine dual-purpose vendor modules, restrooms, a Politur security checkpoint, and fully equipped common areas.

A centerpiece of the project is a secondary plaza with a photo spot adorned with iconic “Guloyas” figures, a cultural hallmark of the region and a UNESCO-recognized Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

President Abinader emphasized the importance of the renovation and addressed a long-standing demand from the local community. He highlighted the government’s vision for the development of San Pedro de Macorís, a province with enormous tourism potential.

“This project represents our commitment to improving the quality of life and promoting economic growth in San Pedro de Macorís,” said Abinader. Tourism Minister David Collado echoed that sentiment, describing the project as a turning point for the city.

“This renovated Malecón will redefine San Pedro de Macorís, improve its image and give a direct boost to tourism in the area,” Collado said during the inauguration.

The upgraded Malecón now features lush coastal landscaping, a central island and an oceanfront zone. Amenities include a playground, an outdoor fitness center, a universal access ramp, improved lighting and additional amenities designed to promote inclusivity and recreation.
