Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs probably didn’t need much help in their pursuit of the AFC’s No. 1 seed in the midst of a 15-1 season, but if they needed an extra push, they got it from the most unlikely source .

After the Chiefs beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday to lock up the top overall seed over the Buffalo Bills and a first-round bye in the playoffs, Mahomes explained he was doing it for his pregnant wife. Apparently, Brittany Mahomes is due soon, so Patrick wanted to secure the extra time off so they could deliver the baby together.

The win was just another Christmas present for the Mahomes family.

“I told my wife I was going to get her the No. 1 seed so we can have that baby,” Mahomes said.

I’d say that’s a good reason to get it done. Again, given how handily the Chiefs beat the Steelers, they probably didn’t need any more motivation to get it done, but there was definitely urgency for the quarterback. Now, the Chiefs can choose to sit Mahomes and other starters in their Week 18 finale if they choose. The quarterback was not scheduled to play another game until Jan. 18 at the earliest.
