Santa Claus, reindeer cleared for escape across Massachusetts, according to Governor Healey’s office

It’s official: Christmas Eve in Massachusetts is a trip.

Santa has officially been approved for a special permit to fly over the state, according to a statement released Tuesday by the governor’s office and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.

“No matter what holidays you celebrate, this is a season of connection and joy,” Gov. Maura Healey said in the statement. “Santa and his reindeer are a beloved part of the magic and we’re delighted to welcome them back to our skies this Christmas Eve.”

Officials said MassWildlife worked closely with North Pole veterinarians to confirm that Santa’s team of reindeer — including Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen — pose no risk of spreading disease to their relatives in Massachusetts, the state’s native populations of white-tailed deer . deer and moose.

“Santa takes the health of his reindeer and the wildlife they encounter very seriously,” he said Martin Feehan, MassWildlife’s lead deer biologist. “We are delighted to report that his team is in tip-top shape and ready to deliver Christmas cheer.”

State officials have been watching the skies closely over the past few weeks due to an increase in reported drone sightings over Massachusetts. Healey previously urged drone operators to “comply with all applicable laws, regulations and appropriate operating procedures” — guidance that presumably also applies to sled operators.

Vermont also cleared Santa and his reindeer for their evening flight with special provisions for reflective glitter and tinsel on the sleigh “to increase visibility (and cheer)” according to the state Department of Agriculture. Connecticut officials did the same on Monday, despite medical concerns about a “shiny red nose.”

It is still unclear whether Santa has been given permission to fly over the rest of New England. Representatives for the North Pole could not be reached for comment.
