No. 16 Wrestling goes 1-2 at Journeymen Collegiate Duals

NASHVILLE – No. 16 University of Missouri wrestling went 1-2 on the day at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday, Dec. 22. and no. 1 Penn State.

Mizzou picked up wins in 11 of the 30 games on the day. Tiger’s performance led to a marquee win for Keegan O’Toole over Penn State’s Levi Haines, 4-1.

Match One: No. 20 Little Rock
The Tigers dropped their first dual of the day to Little Rock by a score of 24-19. Mizzou claimed five of 10 games and picked up bonus points in two of their wins.

Freshman Gage Walker opened the dual with an impressive technical fall over Little Rock’s Tyson Roach to give the Tigers an early lead. 141 pounds Josh Edmond picked up a takedown and back points in sudden victory to pick up his seventh win of the season. The Trojans picked up 3 wins and led 12-8 at the half.

Keegan O’Toole returned to the mat with a ranked technical fall victory to get the Tigers back on the board. Recurring national qualification, Colton Hawks picked up the second straight ranked win for the Tigers by knocking off Brock DelSignore of Little Rock. Heavy weight Jarrett Stoner ended the dual on a high note. The Texas native got a big takedown in the third period to pick up his victory.

  • The Tigers’ all-time record against Little Rock moves to 0-0-1 after their first meeting.
  • Walker’s bonus point win at 125 pounds marked his second career win over Tyson Roach, with the first coming at the Tiger Style Invite in November.
  • Cade Mooreat 133 pounds dropped to 0-2 in his career against Nasir Bailey in a matchup of returning national qualifiers.
  • O’Toole’s technical fall was his fourth-ranked win of the season and continued his streak of bonus point wins in every game this year.
  • Stoner picked up his first career dual win in his first career start with a 7-4 decision. The win was also Stoner’s second over Miley of the season.

Game Two: Binghamton
Mizzou returned to the win column with a 19-15 doubleheader win over Binghamton. The Tigers won five of 10 games in the dual, with the difference coming in bonus points over three of those wins.

At 125 pounds, Walker pulled off an upset over Binghamton’s 33rd-ranked Carson Wagner. Edmond kept the momentum going at 141 pounds and claimed his first bonus point win of the day with a major decision. Redshirt sophomore James Conway closed out the first half of the dual with a strong technical fall to give the Tigers a six-point lead.

Newly graduated MU Joel Mylin made his dual debut and weighed in at 165 pounds. O’Toole continued his hot streak to start the season, picking up another major decision victory. At 184 pounds, the Hawks kept the ball rolling with a ranked win to put more points on the board.

Match notes

  • Mizzou moves to 3-0-0 all-time against Binghamton with the win. The Tigers and Bearcats last matched up in 2021 at the Collegiate Duals.
  • Walker picked up the second upset win of his freshman season, the first coming over UNI’s 31st-ranked Kyle Gollhofer.
  • Edmonds’ major decision was his third bonus point win of the season, joining his two previous technical falls.
  • O’Toole and the Hawks, at 174 and 184, respectively, claimed their second-ranked wins on the day against Binghamton.

Game three: No. 1 Penn State
In the final dual of the night, the Tigers dropped a tough 41-3 loss to the returning National Champions and No. 1-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions won nine of 10 games and scored seven bonus point victories. Mizzou brought home a big 174 win between national title contenders.

Walker looked impressive to start the dual before dropping a close decision between highly touted freshmen at 125 pounds. Redshirt junior Josh Edmond fought hard and took a returning national finalist to sudden victory when he gave up the walk-through takedown.

Two-time national champion Keegan O’Toole picked up a sudden victory in the match of the night. An overtime match led to his victory over 2024 157-pound national champion Levi Haines of Penn State. The win marked the Tigers first in the dual. Hawks held his own at 184 pounds against four-time national champion Carter Starocci, eventually dropping the match.

The dual featured an extra game at the end between Mizzou’s Luqman Masud and Penn State’s Kurt McHenry. McHenry brought home a victory in the exhibition game.

Match notes

  • The loss bumps the Tigers’ overall record against Penn State to 2-4-1
  • Walker was fourth in the final 2023-24 High School rankings at 126 pounds, while Penn State’s Luke Lilledahl was first.
  • In his 141-pound match, Edmond tallied his third overtime match of the season and his fourth match against a former NCAA All-American.
  • O’Toole and Haines’ matchup at 174 pounds led to two national champions. O’Toole claimed two national titles in 2022 and 2023 at 165 pounds, and Haines claimed his at 157 pounds in 2024.
  • Haines and O’Toole previously battled at the 2024 World Team Trials, with Haines coming out on top in the Freestyle competition.
  • Masud collected his first career double action in his exhibition game against McHenry.
