Breaking a self-imposed rule for this bet

Rams vs. Jets, 1:00 ET

I try to stay within my own sports betting rules. Some things are a little more arbitrary than others, but you need some kind of guiding principles to keep yourself in check. There are stupid ones like never ever betting on the Yankees on a Tuesday (not a real rule that I have, but just an example) and other rules that try to prevent yourself from making the same mistake over and over again – like don’t bet on a team on a cross country road trip in the NFL. However, I’m going to throw that rule right out the window here Aries take on the Jets.

The Aries are a bit like a cat, they seem to have nine lives each season. Last year they were bad before the bye week, then bounced back to make the playoffs. This season was much of the same, with the team going 1-4 in their first five games before their off week. Since then, the team is 7-2 with losses to the Dolphins and Eagles. I suppose the Eagles loss is understandable, but the Dophins one is a bit confusing as to how it happened. In any case, they’ve knocked off the Vikings and Bills in that span, proving they can beat playoff teams. Last week they faced the 49ers and beat them in one of the most boring games of the entire season. The teams ended up playing a field-only contest, winning the game 12-6. The Jets haven’t been great this season, but they have one of the best pass defenses in football, allowing the fifth fewest passing yards in the league. New York is near the middle in terms of rushing yards allowed, and the Rams have been very willing to run the ball this season.

The Jets are arguably the most disappointing team in all of football. They’re just 4-10 on the year, and get the coverage of a Super Bowl contender because they have Aaron Rodgers under center. The team has absorbed pretty much every aspect of the game this year, with the exception of the previously mentioned pass defense. The team was on the verge of winning a game for a few weeks and finally got over the hump last week against the lowly Jaguars. Now they return home, where they are only 2-4 for the year. The bright spot for the Jets is that last week looked like the first time Rodgers and Davante Adams were back in sync. Adams rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns last week. Even Garrett Wilson grabbed a touchdown and had 56 receiving yards. This was his first touchdown since October. Rodgers has been pretty good for the team, throwing for the 11th most yards, 7th most touchdowns and only eight interceptions. But there are plenty of times when their offense stalls and looks bad.

I mentioned in my article yesterday that the Ravens would be a good option to tease with another game, and I suggested the Bengals, but the Rams might have been a better option. If you take a 6.5 teaser, you can get the Rams +3 and the Ravens would have been a pick’em. I can’t change the past, but this is what I officially bet and shared on the Outkick Bets podcast. I’m backing the Rams here as well at -3. I think they are the better team and are still fighting for their playoff spot.
