Understanding milk allergies
According to The Mayo Clinic, a milk allergy is an immune system reaction to milk proteins, distinct from milk intolerance, which does not involve the immune system. Symptoms of milk allergy can range from hives, swelling and wheezing to severe anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that can impede breathing.
While milk allergies are relatively common, there have been past incidents of undeclared milk allergens that have prompted recalls.
Earlier in 2024, both chocolate bars and Costco’s Kirkland Signature butter faced recalls due to similar labeling oversights.
