The Perfect Chiefs Backup QB for the 2025 season suddenly becomes available

The Chiefs are dealing with a major issue at QB after Patrick Mahomes’ surprising injury, and while it appears the ailment may not keep him out of Saturday’s game against the Texans, it serves as a reminder that Kansas City must ensure that it always has a capable backup.

Carson Wentz is ready to roll if needed, but is a free agent next offseason. Should he look for a bigger opportunity elsewhere, a recently retired QB has just announced that he is making an NFL comeback.

Teddy Bridgewater, who was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and is beloved across the league, revealed Tuesday that he wants to play for a team next year.

In an appearance with Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport on the NFL Network, Bridgewater stated his intention to sign with a team this offseason. He spent 2024 coaching his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, to a state championship in Florida.

His immediate success and well-documented history as a great leader would make him a wonderful addition to any dressing room. That’s why he makes so much sense as a Chiefs target in free agency.

Kansas City has an excellent culture and the best coach in the NFL in Andy Reid. He won’t be around forever, so it makes sense to start developing young coaches who can eventually take over. Not to suggest that Bridgewater would be ready to be Reid’s successor, though it’s easy to imagine him eventually being ready for a big assistant role once the legendary coach retires.

In the short term, Bridgewater is an overqualified backup. He has completed 66.4% of his career passes for 15,120 yards with 75 TDs to 47 interceptions and has compiled a 33-32 record as a starter. The former Louisville star made a dramatic comeback from a devastating knee injury in 2018. then almost had his leg amputatedreturns to be a productive player.

Perhaps Wentz will sign another contract and remain the Chiefs’ backup. If he yearns for greener pastures, Bridgewater should be strongly considered to join the future three-time defending Super Bowl champions.
