The most talked about movie of 2024 is finally available to own

Mikey Madison fans like yours truly are getting an early Christmas present this week thanks to Neon. Anoradirector Sean Baker’s stunning romantic drama that became the most talked about film of the year (it’s also the best of 2024, in my humble opinion) finally has a digital release date. And the good news is that it’s pretty much already here.

The moviewhich opened nationwide last month, will be available via video on demand starting December 17. Setting the long awaited premium digital release for Anora follows its record-breaking theatrical success, where the modern Cinderella story had the highest opening weekend per screen average in 2024 – as well as the second highest average per screen in the post-pandemic era, second only to Wes Anderson’s Asteroid city.

Madison, who delivers a career-making turn in Anora that will stay with you long after the credits roll stars a young sex worker from Brooklyn named Ani. As Neon explains it, “Ani’s life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the eager son of a Russian billionaire. But when Vanya’s parents find out about the union, they send their henchmen to annul the marriage, which sets off a wild chase through the streets of New York.”

The film is so good, in fact, that it has proven quite difficult to keep track of all the awards it has won – because they just keep on coming. Madison, for example, has already won 10 separate awards for herself while nominations Anora has earned in addition to the Palme d’Or, including four at the Gotham Awards, six from the Film Independent Spirit Awards, seven from the Critics Choice Awards and five Golden Globe nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. The film was named the best film of the year by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

As I said, the above still only scratches the surface. Anora continues to garner accolades and buzz, and as of this writing has pulled in nearly $26 million at the worldwide box office on a mere $6 production budget. Raves the Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus on the film, “Another wonderful chronicle of America’s striving from writer-director Sean Baker given some extra pizzazz by Mikey Madison’s brassy performance, Anora is a romantic drama on the bleeding edge.”
