Elton John promises new music after failing eyesight ends tour and reveals song that started it all

Sir Elton John opened up about a lot on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night, including promising new music to his fans.

The 77-year-old singer’s appearance on the CBS talk show came just weeks after admitting he had lost his sight on the red carpet of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical at the Dominion Theater in London.

The beloved singer spoke about a wide range of topics throughout the episode, though he did confirm at the end that despite his vision being gone, he will be delivering new music to fans in the future.

Asked by host Stephen Colbert if his ‘creative juices’ were still flowing, John said: ‘You’re going to get some more (music).’

“The juices have never dried up, they will never dry up because I always want to create things,” John admitted.

“It’s having the space to do it in my own time and of course there will be new Elton John music,” he confirmed.

John has released 31 solo studio albums beginning with 1969’s Empty Sky, with his last new album being 2016’s Wonderful Crazy Night.

He also released Regimental Sgt. Recorded in 1967 and 1968, Zippo in 2021 was intended to be his debut album before the album was scrapped.

It remained unreleased until Record Store Day in 2021, followed by a wider release in July 2022.

John has been touring almost non-stop since 1970, although his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which spanned five years from 2018 to 2023, marked the end of his days on the road.

Asked how it felt to ‘not have another world tour coming up’, John admitted: ‘It’s the most amazing thing in the world.’

Although he didn’t mention his failing eyesight, he admitted that he loved touring, but now there are things he loves even more.

‘I love the world tours. I have been touring for 55 years. I ended up at a high level. My voice was amazing. The piano playing was fantastic. The band was great,” he said.

‘There are other things I want to do with my life that are more important than touring. I still want to make records. I still want a musical future. But I want to be with my boys and I want to be with David because I love them more than I love touring,” he said of husband David Furnish and their sons Zachary, 13, and Eljiah, 11.

Given his immense popularity and cultural importance, John was asked which artists when he was younger ‘touched his heart’.

‘So many that touched my heart. Little Richard touched my heart because he was so amazing. Ray Charles touched my heart. So many people,” John said.

He then admitted that ‘Elvis Presley changed my life with Heartbreak Hotel. When I first heard that record I knew I wanted to do this, I want to do this, I love this, this is so different.’

Elton John’s life and magnificent career are on full display in the new documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, which debuted last week on Disney Plus.
