WATCH: Wayward Akash Deep forces Pant to go acrobatic

It was almost similar to Steve Harmison’s delivery at the Gabba back in the 2007 Ashes

After a great display on day two, Akash Deep bowled one of the worst deliveries of the year when he strayed one outside the track on day three at the Gabba. Trying to keep Carey off the strike in the next over, the Bengal pacer attempted a wide yorker which went wide of the stripe.

It left Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant gasping for breath as the 27-year-old had to leap at full length to get his hands on the ball, which raced away towards the third-man region for a boundary. The Bengal pacer went back and scratched his nose, almost as if to show how embarrassed he was after that ball.

Isa Guha, who was commentating on the game, couldn’t stop himself from comparing that moment to ‘infamous’ start from Steve Harmison in the 2007 Ashes. It was at the same venue 17 years ago that Harmison bowled a terrifying first ball in the history of the sport, with the ball traveling straight to second slip.

England’s then-captain Andrew Flintoff was also left unimpressed after that start to the much-anticipated Ashes. In the end, however, Akash Deep accounted for the Australian wicketkeeper, who hooked the ball straight to Shubman Gill, who was placed in the mid-wicket region for that shot.
