UPDATED, 11:52 a.m.: Quarterbacks are the story today, no doubt about it. On the one hand, there’s Jayden Daniels, the Heisman winner at LSU who returns to the state as a visitor — and a star, the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Stopping him will be no easy task for the Saints.

On the other hand, it’s second-year pro Jake Haener making his first career start. Interim coach Darren Rizzi and the staff chose Haener over Spencer Rattler, who was 0-3 as a starter filling in for Carr in October. How Haener can manage the game could dictate whether New Orleans can stay close at all.

Another factor: There are a ton of Commanders jerseys in the stands. The place was noisier when Washington ran out than it was for the Saints’ pregame video.

UPDATED, 10:54 AM: Welcome back to the New Orleans Saints live blog. I’m Times-Picayune Deputy Editor Zach Ewing, here to bring you updates, analysis and social media reaction to the Saints’ home game against the Washington Commanders.

This is the first time the Saints have actually played the Washington franchise when it has been known as the Commanders; the teams’ last meeting was in 2021, when it was just the Washington Football Team. Of course, all previous meetings were before the name change from the Redskins.

Today’s inactive report has a few notable names. One for the Saints is quarterback Derek Carr – not a surprise after he was demoted yesterday after injuring his hand and suffering a concussion late in last week’s win at New York. The little surprise is defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon, who was added to the active roster this week and looked set to make his season debut after suffering an Achilles injury in the offseason. But he is not active.

On the Washington side, kicker Zane Gonzalez is down, meaning Greg Joseph will be the practice squad kicker. Saints fans may recall that Gonzalez had a nightmare day here for the Cleveland Browns in 2018, missing two field goals and two extra points in a close loss to the Saints; The Browns cut him the next day and signed … Greg Joseph as his replacement.

Also inactive for the Browns is wide receiver KJ Osborn. With Noah Brown also added to injured reserve this week, Jamison Crowder — activated from IR — will join the rotation at receiver.
