Update: Rip the current statement affecting Mobile and Baldwin counties until Saturday evening

An updated rip current statement was issued by the National Weather Service on Friday at 10:27, valid from 18.00 to Saturday at 6:00 PM for Mobile and Baldwin counties.

The weather service adds: “Dangerous rip currents are expected.”

“Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water,” the weather service describes. “Swim near a lifeguard. If you are caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If you can, swim in a direction that follows the shoreline. If you cannot escape, turn toward the shore and call or beckon for help.”

Navigating Rip Currents: Your Survival Manual

Rip currents are channelized currents of water that flow away from the shore at surf beaches. The speed can vary from moment to moment and can quickly increase to become dangerous for anyone entering the surf. Rip currents can sweep even the strongest swimmer away from shore. Trying to swim against a rip current will only use up your energy; the energy you need to survive and escape the rip current. If you get caught in a rip current, try to stay calm and follow the advice below from the weather service:

Keep your cool – they won’t pull you under:

Your first rule of thumb: Keep a clear head. Rip currents will not pull you below the surface of the water. Panic is your enemy; it depletes precious energy necessary for your survival.

Do not swim against the current:

Trying to swim straight for the beach when caught in a rip current is futile and exhausting. The current is too strong. Instead, swim parallel to the shore and away from the rip current’s grip.

Signal for help if needed:

If you feel you cannot reach the shore, relax, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Search lifesaving beaches:

If at all possible, swim only at beaches with lifeguards.

Never swim alone at unguarded beaches:

If you choose to swim at beaches without a lifeguard, never swim alone. Grab a friend and have that person pick up a cell phone so they can call 911 for help.

Rip currents are formidable forces of nature, but knowing how to react can significantly increase your chances of safely navigating these challenging waters. Stay informed, be vigilant and prioritize safety when enjoying the surf.
