2 Non-Comedy Country Musical or Comedy Nominations

The Golden Globe Awards kicked off again Monday with nominations for its 82nd annual ceremony, marking the first time the celebration is not under the guidance of the formerly non-profit Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

One thing that didn’t change, however, was the Golden Globes’ movie — musical or comedy category — or at least what’s considered a comedy. Generally, it’s pretty obvious which of its annual nominees are musicals — which this year includes Evil and Emilia Perez– but time and time again there are films and/or performances in said films that are considered comedies when they are not.

The Golden Globes have been down this road before. In recent years, the 2015 sci-fi adventure drama The Martian earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Golden Globes, as well as a nomination for Best Actor for the film for Matt Damon. The Martian won in both races.

Ridley Scott was also nominated for Best Director for The Martian by Golden Globes, but the organization doesn’t nominate filmmakers by category and instead includes them all in one batch.

This year, the Golden Globes have two Martian-similar nominations in the Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy categories. Challengers— a sports drama about a heated love triangle between three tennis players — earned a nomination for Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category, as did Zendaya for Best Actress for the film.

Additionally, a musical or comedy nomination was announced for Hugh Grant for Best Performance by an Actor in a Male Actor for Heretical.

However, Heretical is a psychological horror thriller about Mr. Reed, a madman who holds two Mormon missionaries captive while throughout the film advocating what he believes to be the one true religion. Eventually, Reed’s speech turns to torture and murder.

True, Grant is predominantly known for his work in such romantic comedies as Four weddings and a funeral and Notting Hillbut his performance in the Heretical is not as cheerful and friendly as his character appears in the first part of the film.

What’s different about the Golden Globes this year?
