Where to get last-minute groceries on Thanksgiving: 2024

Weeks of planning and days of cooking for Thanksgiving can only go so far. Sometimes an important ingredient either runs out or doesn’t make it into the shopping cart.

In Massachusetts, finding places to shop for that forgotten item can be difficult — especially because the Bay State has “Blue Laws,” which determine which businesses can legally be open on holidays like Thanksgiving.

Although Bay Staters may find themselves with very few places to turn for basic last-minute groceries, there are still some convenient stores and smaller markets open.

What’s open on Thanksgiving:

CVS

While you probably won’t find a whole turkey at your local drugstore, CVS has been known to carry a few basic foods. If you forgot the gravy mix or some butter, CVS will be open for business on Thanksgiving, although hours may vary by location.

Walgreens

Like CVS, Walgreens is stocked with some of the most basic food and beverage items. Most Walgreens stores will be open from 9am to 6pm on Thanksgiving for any last minute food or health needs.

H March – a nationwide Asian supermarket chain with locations in Quincy, Burlington and Cambridge – is open 365 days a year – including Thanksgiving.

South End Food Emporium

South End Food Emporium is a neighborhood market located at 469 Columbus Ave. in Boston. It offers fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese, biscuits and groceries. For snacks, appetizers or basic ingredients, Boston-area residents can shop there from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

Broadway Marketplace

Broadway Marketplace in Cambridge will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The market offers fresh produce, baked goods, deli meats, cheeses and other groceries.

Stop & Shop:

While the Mass. stores will be closed on Thanksgiving, the Connecticut stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

ShopRite

For Springfield-area residents, the ShopRite location just over the Connecticut border in Enfield is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is stocked with traditional supermarket products.
