Aston Villa v Juventus: Champions League – live | Champions League

Key events

89 min: Locatelli with a nice move. He is a nice player. In the end, Villa gets rid of Rogers, who goes for a drive. Villa still can’t get Di Gregorio to save.

Share

87 min: Duran finally gets involved. But he has very little company when he takes aim. The ball is smashed away and it is soon back to Pau Torres

Share

85 min: Duran has so far been a passenger. Juve have him well marked. The price of being infamous as a sub. Another Juve wonder: Fagioli continues for Thuram, Philogene is also on for Villa.

84 min: Some Juve panic as the defenders try to play out and Villa forces the ball to Rogers. Emery is not impressed with the resulting shot.

Share

83 min: Juve substitution: Yildiz off, Mbangula on.

Share

81 min: Rogers leads the next one after as Conceicao lurks. The next corner is cleared. Can Villa counter? Yes, but slowly.

Share

80 min: How do these changes affect the game? Initially, it is about Juventus looking more comfortable. Rogers, a big boy, mistakes Conceicao, a small boy. The free kick rushes in and it results in a corner kick.

Share

78 min: Weah is booked now and here come the subs. Duran and Barkley for Watkins and Duran.

Share

77 min: Martin Gamage contacts: “I am fascinated that this MBM has turned into a discussion about the genius that is Robert Fripp. I’m a big fan of early 80’s Adrian Belew era King Crimson. That trio of albums (Discipline/Beat/Three of a Perfect Pair) is as good a run of three consecutive albums as anyone has produced… ever.”

Share

75 min: Tielemans has a dig at goal but Di Gregorio pounces after reading what was a slightly scraped shot.

Share

74 min: The referee booed for delaying the arrival of Villa’s subs. The ball remains in play, both teams try to attack but are unable to create much of note.

Share

72 min: Kamara, Tielemans and Kamara attempt a passing move…but there is a communication breakdown. Villa is the flatter of the two, but here comes the cavalry.

Share

70 min: Oh no! McGinn has the target begging. Bailey puts it on a plate, but he can’t beat Di Gregorio. Some credit to the keeper but it needed a lot more gas. He shakes his head… actually it was Locatelli who came back to clear.

68 min: Big noise from the Juve fans. Their team is starting to fancy this. Conceicao continues to be a real pest. Villa and Digne have stopped him so far,

66 min: Danilo, once at Manchester City, replaces Savona in Juventus’ first change.

Share

65 min: Brilliant save from Martinez. Koopmeiners’ corner, Conceicao’s header and Martinez hits it from behind. Juve think it’s over the line, but the referee’s watch was not triggered. No goal. What a goalkeeper Martinez can be.

Share

64 min: Bailey in the room, but Gatti, who has been fantastic, steps over. Very classic, Italian style. The Italians do it better, as that t-shirt used to say.

Share

62 min: Like the Koopmeiners, Watkins is in a world of frustration. In this close game, down the blocked middle, it is almost impossible to find space.

60 min: Kári Tulinius: “To go to the other end of the virtuoso scale from Robert Fripp… I can’t find an exact release date, but with songs about Kennedy’s brain and a junkie Santa, David Peel and the Lower East Side’s 1974 album Santa Claus Rooftop Junkie is the spiritual of November. Either way, it’s proto-punk at its finest.”

John Lennon a follower if I’m not mistaken.

Share

58 min: Thuram finally finds a way forward, tries to shoot but misses badly. Koopmeiners, who was supposed to lead the Villa line, has hardly had a kick.

Share

56 min: Locatelli blocks Kamara and then kicks the ball away. No yellow. The Villa fans were furious. They decide that they will referee the match from now on. They call for a move in the box. But nothing does. The real judge doesn’t have it.

Share

55 min: Rogers is sent away but is also caught by a sliding ball.

Share

54 min: Juventus have yet to find anything resembling rhythm in the first half, and it wasn’t exactly brilliant either. Yildiz falls over on the greasy surface.

Share

52 min: Big row over who takes this… Bailey blames it somewhere near Birmingham’s Jewelery Quarter. Digne is sad.

Share

51 min: Instead, Tielemans is felled after Rogers’ pass. Another free kick chance. They have had the chance to get within range.

Share

50 min: Juve are doing their best to wind up Tielemans, Conceicao the protagonist. He’s on a yellow, let’s remember.

Share

49 min: Juve want a penalty. But it is estimated that Pau Torres has not been able to stop the ball from Concecaio.

Share

48 min: Paul Griffin contacts: This is one of Fripp’s greatest moments. And is arguably one of the most convincing explanations of genius ever delivered:. I love that Visconti starts out with the intention of coming across as a bit modest, self-effacing, and then decides to REDACTED that and wallowing in Fripp, Eno, kissing at the wall, the Atlantic horns, the whole thing. Don’t blame him.

Brilliant indeed.
Share

47 min: It’s a short corner. One from the training ground but Villa have to recycle, McGinn sends Digne back but his cross is gathered at the second attempt.

Share

Back at Villa Park

46 min: Villa look to get off to a quick start and force a corner through Digne.

Share

Villa takes to the track to the tunes of Ozzy’s Crazy Train. It’s a little more like it.

Share

Phil Brennan contacts: “Court and Spark, On the Beach and Grevious Angel for me. Oh, and Queen II.”

Have three of them. Sorry, Freddie.

Share

Spotter’s badge for Ben Fisher who called this one on our pages last sunday. Ben is also our man at Villa Park.

Half time: Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

A half that got better, a clash of styles with one trying to eliminate the other. Ollie Watkins’ strike was the best Villa effort, while Yildiz and Concecaio were the pick of a Juve attack lacking a focal point.

Share

45 min: Cheers as Kalulu is booked for a free kick on Watkins. It’s in a dangerous position…Digne’s left boot scoops it up and out.

“My name is Kalulu
My first rule of thumb
I don’t say where I’m going
Or where I come from.”

As the boys no doubt sing. That moment – the free kick, not the song – brings the curtain down on the first half.

44 min: This has been a very smooth affair. Just what you would expect from two teams in the middle of the Champions League ladder. You know, maybe this thing is good after all.

Share

42 min: More of the game swings one way and the other. Concecaio sees a gap but Martinez reads the shot well at the near post.

Share

40 min: Richard Hirst joins: “Pretzel Logic yes, Bright Lights yes, but red? Loved early Crimson but the 73/74 albums…..seeing them around the Starless era was the only gig I’ve left early.” I feel the same way about later Adrian Belew standard Crimson. Fripp is a genius, but beyond his Bowie stuff is the definition of difficult artist.

Share

39 min: Pau Torres fault Weah, he had left himself too much to make up for. It’s a yellow one.

Share

37 min: Best effort yet. Kamara digs the shot out and Watkins gives himself space to crack the ball into the goal. A fine save from Di Gregorio and from the corner Cash tries to smash in another ball. Juve clear and go away through Weah. He shoots wide. It opens up even more.

35 minutes: Juventus attempt a pass sweep across Villa. Cambiaso’s shot ends it and Motta looks shaken by how poor and laborious it is. In truth, the Villa defenders left him with nothing but the spectacular.

Share

33 min: The middle of the lane is as congested as Spaghetti Junction at 18.00 on a Wednesday. No quarter is given either. Just like driving in Brum, actually.

Share

31 min: Tielemans tries to find Watkins, but out steps Gatti, who appears to be a commanding type. Boos as Bailey is fouled by Cambiaso who is not shown a yellow card. Then boos as the free kick is blocked. This one is techy

Share

30 min: Concecaio has yet to overcome Digne, but it looks like Juve are most likely to do so.

Share

28 min: Loud noise from Villa fans trying to cheer their team on. There is a dip in spirits when Matty Cash is penalized for accidental handball. It is not an easy task.

Share

26 min: Juve raise the tempo, Concecaio the ball out, Locatelli becomes increasingly influential.
