Alabama A&M linebacker dies after injury during Magic City Classic

NORMAL, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama A&M University said a football player injured during the Magic City Classic football game has passed away.

Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker for the Bulldogs, was carted off the field during the Magic City Classic on Oct. 26 with an injury. A school spokesman said Burnett died on November 26.

According to AAMU, Burnett joined the Bulldog family in the summer of 2024 ahead of his redshirt offseason campaign. He was a native of Lakewood, California, where he attended Mayfield High School.

After graduation, Burnett joined Grambling State University’s football program during the 2023 season.

The Alabama A&M Athletic Director released the following statement on Burnett’s death:

“Today, our Bulldog family is devastated by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.,” said Alabama A&M Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant. “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership and compassion left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Although words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family who stood by his side through this unimaginable ordeal.

We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Medrick’s parents, siblings and loved ones. We also offer our heartfelt support to his teammates, coaches and the entire Alabama A&M community as they mourn this loss. In this moment of grief, we come together to honor Medrick’s legacy and celebrate the light he brought to our lives. May we all draw strength from each other as we navigate this difficult time.

Burnett appeared in seven games this season and recorded a season-best three tackles at Austin Peay.

Arrangements for the memorial service will be announced later.
