Stores Open, Closed on Thanksgiving 2024: Grocers, Retailers, Walmart, Target and More

Don’t panic. Dinner can be saved in time, but if you were hoping to do some early holiday shopping at the same time you grabbed these ingredients, it might be a little trickier.

Several grocery chains will be open on Thanksgiving, the most food-centric of all American holidays. But major retailers will be largely closed as the trend of luring people to start their Black Friday sales bonanzas before the table is cleared for Thanksgiving dinner dishes has waned significantly.

There are of course exceptions on both fronts. Some grocers are giving their staff time off to spend with family — and some retailers will stay open in hopes of luring in early birds and tablecloth-spilling people.

Here’s a look at the stores that will—and won’t—be open on Thanksgiving 2024. As always, note that hours can vary, so it’s a good idea to call first. And also remember that blue laws in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island prohibit retailers from being open in those states.
