Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle quickly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the world playing every day. Switch Wordle fan-created versions also appeared, including Battle Royale QuarrelMusic identification game Heardleand variations such as Dordle and Quordle which makes you guess several words at once.

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was bought by New York Timesand TikTok creators even live stream themselves when they play.

The entire archive of the past Wordle puzzle was originally available for anyone to enjoy whenever they wanted, but it was later removed and the website’s creator said it was done at the request of New York Times. However New York Times then rolled out its own Wordle Archiveonly available to NYT Games subscribers.
