An umbrella or raincoat may be needed on Thanksgiving when traveling through New Jersey this year. Forecasts in North Jersey are calling for rain throughout Thursday, which is usually not the case for Thanksgiving weather in the Garden State.

The National Weather Service reports that Paramus and surrounding areas will likely see showers on Thanksgiving. Their chance of precipitation is 90% Monday afternoon.

Other forecasters like The Weather Channel all but guarantee showers for North Jersey this Thanksgiving. Their forecast for Paramus and other surrounding cities in Bergen County estimates a 97% chance of precipitation during the morning and afternoon of Thanksgiving.

Although rain is likely, weather reports indicate showers won’t be too overwhelming for the holiday. The NWS reports that between one-half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible. The Weather Channel predicts precipitation will accumulate to about half an inch during the day.

Rain is still likely in the evening hours, but mostly before 20, according to the NWS. The service shows a 60% chance of overnight rain in the Paramus area starting Monday afternoon. The Weather Channel predicts a 24% chance of rain in the evening for the same areas.

Thanks for the rain?

New Jersey could use some rain as the state was on a drought watch throughout October and earlier this month. Wildfires occurred in some New Jersey forests as a result of the dry conditions.

North Jersey saw its share of warm days this fall, but that won’t be the case on Thanksgiving. The NWS predicts a high near 49 degrees during the day and a low near 36 degrees in the evening.

Past Thanksgiving weather in NJ

In recent years, rain has not been a common occurrence on Thanksgiving.

No rain fell in North Jersey last year on Thanksgiving, as the NWS reports that Teterboro received zero inches of rain on November 23, 2023.

Bergenfield saw a light drizzle on Thanksgiving in 2021 and just under half an inch in 2020, but no rain touched the city on the holiday in 2022, 2019, 2018 or 2017, according to data presented by Bob Ziff of the North Jersey Weather Observers.

Heavy rain hasn’t been in the Thanksgiving forecast in North Jersey for some time, and neither has snow. The last reported Thanksgiving snow in Bergenfield was in 2016, but the city only saw traces of snow, according to Ziff.

Thanksgiving this year in New Jersey looks to be a little colder than previous years. The high temperature in Bergenfield Thursday should be lower than the previous five Thanksgivings in Bergenfield, according to Ziff’s data. It won’t be nearly as cold in 2018, when the high was only 30 degrees in North Jersey.
