Heavy rain in San Jose leaves many without power and affects some holiday events

SAN JOSE, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – Heavy rain in San Jose Friday may have caused some power outages, but didn’t stop residents from enjoying the holiday cheer.

Rain fell hard near San Jose City Hall as the atmospheric river made its presence felt around the city and other parts of the South Bay, where the rain also affected traffic during the evening commute along Highway 17.

“We just got home from work and we were just going to relax, watch some TV and then all of a sudden the lights went out,” said Kyle Bierro, a San Jose resident.

Weather may have played a role in a power outage in the area of The Alameda and W. Hedding Street in San Jose, leaving residents like Bierro in the dark this rainy night.

“We have a lot of flashlights, so we got a lot of light, but no power,” Bierro said.

The rain also affects holiday events. Christmas in the Park Drive Through Light Show in San Jose, which didn’t see many drivers, and Enchant Christmas in Paypal Park saw smaller opening night crowd sizes as a result of the storm.

“Somehow people will always, you know, look at the weather and decide if they’re you know. They’re coming out or not,” said Brian Davis, an event organizer.

But the rain did not prevent those present in Paypal Park from enjoying a bit of holiday fun.

“We thought about changing the date, but we honestly figured that with the weather, there would be enough people so we could do more things,” said one of the participants.

“I think it’s fine. I think that’s part of the fun. You know, it’s the weather … we (can’t) control it and we’re just here to have fun,” said another participant.
