49ers RB Christian McCaffrey’s Isn’t Seeing the Holes Like He Used to

SANTA CLARA — Christian McCaffrey is clearly not himself right now.

Since returning from bilateral Achilles tendinitis, he has averaged just 3.7 yards per carry. carry – down from 5.4 yards per carry last season.

Why isn’t he playing as well?

Here’s what run game coordinator Chris Foerster said about McCaffrey this week, courtesy of the 49ers PR department.

Q: How do you feel RB Christian McCaffrey’s chemistry is in his second game back? He has only been back for two. Do you feel he is a Christian?

FOERSTER: “It gets better every week. Christian, I’m sure he’s self-confessed, he doesn’t feel he’s completely back in the groove. And I’m not saying he isn’t. As I say every week, it is very difficult for me to speak negatively about Christian. He is amazing. Every week, that’s why he takes reps. That’s why he has to be out there. He loves to see it. He is a grinder. He has to be out there working at it every single day. As he gets that feeling, he gets better and better. That is also what is encouraging. I see half-glass how this goes forward with him.”

Q: Is it a timing thing with Christian?

FOERSTER: “It is vision. It’s more vision. It just doesn’t matter how many times you do it, it’s just like anything else. We talk about how guys have to train, every sport you have to train, you have to go out and train. And they practice full speed to some extent. Some of the sports that have longer seasons, they don’t play hard. But the point of it is that you don’t hit – how many full speed reps do you get running certain plays? And even if you’ve seen it in previous years, you get back and groove quicker, but you still have to go out and do it. You still have to go see it. You still have to go out at live pace. You still have to get hit and tackled and get up and back again and see it and the game flows differently. So it’s just a matter of getting a few more looks at it, I think, for him.”
