Patrick Mahomes fined for unsportsmanlike conduct after touchdown celebration in Chiefs-Bills game

BUFFALO, NY. (KCTV) – Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remained calm while reacting to his team’s fourth quarter touchdown, but his choice gesture still cost him over $14,000 in fines.

There were about 12 minutes left in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the Buffalo Bills. Already down 14-23, it took an extensive series of plays before Mahomes got the chance he needed – He intercepted the ball to Noah Gray in the back corner of the end zone and cut the Bills’ lead to just three points.

In a clip posted by NFL Network’s Tom PelisseroMahomes is shown making two “finger guns” to celebrate.

The National Football League later pronounced the post a “violent gesture” that falls under its definition of unsportsmanlike conduct. The fine for a first offense of unsportsmanlike conduct is $14,096.

According to CBS Sports, Mahomes had only been penalized once in his career. Last season, he was fined $50,000 for “verbally abusing” officials, coincidentally during the team’s previous loss to the Bills on December 10, 2023.

The Chiefs eventually fell to the Bills, 21–30, snapping an undefeated streak that stretched back to December 31, 2023.

While the team is no longer seeking a perfect 2024 season, they are favored to win their Nov. 24 game against the Carolina Panthers. The game starts at 12.00 and is broadcast locally on CBS.
